Merielle Kenni, renowned as Vanuatu’s leading cricket umpire, has landed in Bali, Indonesia, ready to officiate at the ICC U19 Women’s T20 World Cup East Asia Pacific Qualifier, which commences today 14th May and concludes May 20th.
Kenni who is currently studying at the University of the South Pacific towards a bachelor’s in accounting and finance, began her cricketing journey as a player for the Holiday Inn Resort Vanuatu Women’s team in 2017, but her focus shifted towards umpiring, leading her to her debut at an international tournament in 2022, officiating at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup East Asia Pacific Qualifier. Since then, she has steadily progressed, officiating both domestically and at the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup East Asia Pacific Qualifier last year and the 2024 Pacific Cup. Her dedication and skill have earned her recognition, culminating in her selection for this tournament.
Reflecting on her selection, Kenni expressed her gratitude, stating:
“I am incredibly grateful and humbled to have been selected by the ICC to umpire another EAP qualifier tournament.
Having this kind of exposure and experience will help me to improve at my craft and hopefully propel my career umpiring even further.”
The event, starting on May 14th at the Uduyana Cricket Ground, will witness teams from the region, including Papua New Guinea, defending champions Indonesia, Fiji, and Samoa, vying for a coveted spot at the 2025 U19 Women’s T20 World Cup.
Unfortunately, Vanuatu's participation in this year's competition was impacted by the disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Consequently, the nation regretfully could not field a women's squad. However, the Vanuatu Cricket Association has reaffirmed its dedication to future editions, with a firm commitment to assemble a squad for forthcoming tournaments.
