UPDATE For those not able to make the games this weekend, we have set up a GoFundMe to support the relief effort: https://gofund.me/c030ab2a
The Vanuatu Cricket Association (VCA) extends its heartfelt gratitude to cricket clubs and communities across Australia who have come together to raise funds and offer support following the devastating earthquake that struck Vanuatu on Tuesday.
This weekend, the spirit of solidarity will shine through events in Stanthorpe, Queensland, and Craigieburn, Melbourne, where donations and fundraising efforts will provide vital assistance to those affected.
In Stanthorpe, all eyes will be on the Stanthorpe & District Cricket Association / IComply 20/20 final on Saturday afternoon. The “Vanthorpe” side—a mixed-gender team featuring ni-Vanuatu seasonal workers—has reached the championship match undefeated after extraordinary performances from its players.
Former Vanuatu men’s national captain Andrew Mansale leads the tournament’s run tally, including an astonishing 195 not out, while women’s star Nasimana Navaika sits atop the wicket-takers’ list, replicating her achievement at the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup Qualifier earlier this year.
If victorious in the final, the Vanthorpe team has pledged to donate the $3,000 winners’ cheque (approx. 227,000 Vatu) to the young son of Valerie Kalkoa, who tragically lost her life in the earthquake just three days after returning from her second season with IComply. In addition, the association, umpires, and VCA partner IComply have also pledged additional financial support.
Watch live: Saturday's match can be streamed free on YouTube from 3pm AEDT & Vanuatu time here.
Meanwhile, in Craigieburn, Melbourne, a charity match will take place involving the nine Vanuatu cricketers—eight men and one woman—currently playing in Melbourne competitions. The match will feature Vanuatu players competing against representatives from the local community. Funds raised will be used to provide essential support for the families and loved ones of Vanuatu Cricket staff and players, including access to clean water, food, and electricity.
VCA CEO Tim Cutler expressed his deep appreciation:
“After such a traumatic experience for so many, the support we are receiving from our Australian cricketing friends is truly humbling. It reinforces the bond between our nations and highlights the unique power of cricket to unite people across borders. On behalf of the VCA, our players, and the wider Vanuatu community, we sincerely thank everyone involved in these initiatives. Your contributions are helping us recover and rebuild.”
