The stars of Vanuatu cricket were celebrated in style at the 2024 Vanuatu Cricket Awards Night, an event honouring outstanding achievements and contributions to the sport over the past year. Players, umpires and clubs gathered to reflect on a year of remarkable performances and to recognise those who stood out both on and off the field.
Domestic cricket dominates the spotlight
Shay Narai emerged as the evening’s standout performer, taking home two major awards: Domestic Bowler of the Year and Domestic Breakout Star. With 25 wickets at a bowling average of just 10.32 and economy rates of 6.4 in T20s and 3.4 in one-day matches, Narai’s impact on the domestic circuit was undeniable.
Jamal Vira, named Domestic Batter of the Year, impressed with 546 runs, including five half-centuries, showcasing his consistency and flair at the crease. Meanwhile, Domestic Women’s Player of the Year Rachel Andrew shone as an all-rounder, scoring 359 runs at an average of 51.29, complemented by four wickets and sharp fielding.
Nick Venables was crowned Domestic Men’s Player of the Year, excelling with both bat and ball, amassing 502 runs and taking 25 wickets throughout the season.
International stars recognised
Joshua Rasu and Nasimana Navaika were among the international standouts, receiving accolades for their performances on the global stage. Rasu, named Best Male International Player, impressed with 13 T20 International wickets and solid batting contributions across formats. Navaika’s all-round skills earned her the title of Best Female International Player, with 18 T20 wickets at an economy of 4.97 and crucial runs to her name.
Veteran Andrew Mansale and Rasu also shared honours as International Rising Stars, with Mansale’s leadership and dependable batting earning him well-deserved recognition.
Celebrating the spirit of the game
The awards night wasn’t just about individual brilliance. The Spirit of Cricket Award went to Tafea Cricket Club and Carmen Piloe for embodying the values of sportsmanship and community. Officiating excellence was also acknowledged, with Merielle Kenni named Umpire of the Year, while Marcelina Mete was recognised as the Upcoming Umpire of the Year.
