La Journée de la Francophonie Celebrated by the Women’s Island Cricket Program

The Women’s Island Cricket Program, supported by the Social Impact and Inclusion Program, hosted an Island Cricket Cup competition on March 20, 2025, at Vanuatu Cricket Grounds to celebrate La Francophonie. The event brought together mamas from Vila North, Imaki, and Eratap, creating a fun and inclusive atmosphere while promoting community engagement through sport.

Three teams, representing Tafea, Malampa, and Shefa, competed in an exciting tournament. Malampa claimed the 1st prize of 16,000 VT, with Tafea securing the Runner-Up prize of 15,000 VT, and Shefa earning 3rd place with a prize of 14,000 VT.

Individual awards were also presented:

  • Best Batter: Helen Brechtefield (Malampa)

  • Best Bowler: Louise Wadra (Tafea)

  • Best Fielder: Joyce John (Tafea)

  • Player of the Match: Marie Willy (Tafea)

Reflecting on the significance of the event, Madame Marie Antoinette Nirua shared, “It is a modest gesture from our sponsors, but it means a lot as it provides an opportunity for mothers and young girls to laugh together and release the stress caused in each household by the events of 17/12/24.”

The Vanuatu Cricket Association expresses deep appreciation to Marie Antoinette Nirua for her role in securing sponsorships and extends gratitude to all donors who contributed cash and in-kind prizes, making the event a resounding success.

Looking ahead, the Vanuatu Cricket Association is eager to continue this partnership and celebrate Francophonie Day with even greater enthusiasm next year.
