In a thrilling showdown at the Vanuatu Cricket Grounds (Korman) yesterday afternoon, Ifira clinched the 2024 Shefa Day Cup title after a hard-fought victory over Imaki. The grand final, a centrepiece of the Shefa Day celebrations, attracted an enthusiastic crowd that witnessed an exciting match between the top teams. This year marked the first time the Shefa Day Cup competition was officially included in the Shefa Day celebrations, adding excitement to the festivities.
The Vanuatu Cricket Association extended its heartfelt gratitude to Ifira Steevedoring for their generous sponsorship of the event. The victorious Ifira team was awarded a 50,000 Vatu grand prize, while Imaki, the runners-up, earned 30,000 Vatu. Erakor, securing third place, received 20,000 Vatu. Other participating teams, including Vila North, Blacksands, and Eton, were each recognised with 2,000 Vatu per team for their efforts and sportsmanship.
Individual awards highlighted the talent on display with Susan Tawia of Ifira honoured as the best batter, her powerful swings and strategic plays crucial to her team’s success. Winnie Kalpoikai, also from Ifira, was named best runner for her agility and speed on the field. Imaki’s Ismaela Imelly earned the best bowler award, showcasing precision and skill, while her teammate Sharon Charlie was celebrated as the best fielder for her defensive plays. Each of these standout players received 2,000 Vatu for their performances.
The prize-giving ceremony, held at Korman Stadium as part of the official Shefa Day celebrations on Tuesday, saw families, friends, and cricket enthusiasts come together to celebrate not just their victories, but also Shefa Day itself.
