Jonas Piloe, the Santo Development Officer for Vanuatu Cricket, has successfully introduced cricket to some of the most remote communities in Santo (West and North-West), thanks to the support of HELPR-1, a specialised health response and logistics vessel operated by Respond Global.
Through the Health Emergency Logistics Preparedness and Response (HELPR) program, HELPR-1 provides critical support to emergency response teams across the Pacific. In this case, it has enabled Vanuatu Cricket to expand its development programs into previously inaccessible areas.
Jonas has conducted cricket development activities in several communities, including Dayspring Primary School, Olpoe, Nokuku, Vunavae, Elia, Vasalea, Tasmate, Wusi, Menevula Primary School, and Mamara Primary School. These sessions have introduced cricket to over 700 students and adults, many of whom were experiencing the sport for the first time.
The program featured fun and engaging activities that introduced the basics of cricket, allowing participants of all ages and skill levels to get involved. For Jonas, this achievement is a major milestone. "It has taken years of negotiations to bring cricket to these communities, but today, that dream has become a reality," he shared.
A key highlight of the program was the enthusiastic involvement of local teachers and community members. Jonas trained three teachers along with interested adults, equipping them with the skills to run simple cricket sessions. Their involvement ensures that cricket can continue to grow in schools and communities even after the initial development sessions.
"I'm incredibly grateful for this opportunity as the Northern Provincial Development Officer," Jonas said. "Bringing cricket to remote areas has been a long-time goal, and to see students, teachers, and community members embrace the game is truly rewarding."
Vanuatu Cricket extends its sincere appreciation to HELPR-1, the Vanuatu Cricket Association, Dr. Basil, the Sanma Health Team, Sanma Police, and the Sanma Education Office for their invaluable support in making this mission a success.
